Message from the Managing Director

I am Hiroaki Terashima, and I have succeeded Ikuo Yamamoto as Managing Director of IC Net. I joined IC Net in 1998 after a stint at a research firm in Japan. Since then, I have engaged in development assistance around the world, mostly in Asia and Africa, with coastal resource management as a main field of expertise. It is a high honor and distinct privilege to assume the post.

My mission is threefold: (1) to build upon the accomplishments of the two previous Managing Directors: Hiroaki Yonesaka, the founder who had built the firm since October 1993; and Ikuo Yamamoto, who strengthened the firm's underpinnings; (2) to think of how best to expand and develop the firm in the future; and (3) to take the lead in implementing it.

We, IC Net, will keep providing superior consulting services that make a difference for our clients while bearing in mind our corporate guiding principles and always thinking of what we can do to serve our clients better. It is not easy to see exactly how the world will turn out in these turbulent times. Japan has a new government led by the Democratic Party of Japan since September 2009 while the world has seen a major economic downturn since the financial crisis of late 2008. However, we are certain that Japan's international development assistance will shoulder a more important role than ever, and so will development assistance consultants.

We have experts in many fields such as pubic health, education, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, the environment, gender issues, and governance. We carry out many tasks related to international development assistance such as research, technical assistance, and training. Our main clients are the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and international organizations such as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

We have received high marks from our clients, other stakeholders, and most importantly, people of developing countries, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of international development assistance. However, we will not rest on our laurels. We will do our very best to help realize a "society in which people think and build a bright future for themselves" and a "society in which people respect and learn from one another," both of which are part of our corporate guiding principles.

Hiroaki TERASHIMA
Managing Director
